Doug Madill is a plein air painter currently living in jersey City, New Jersey, USA. He was born near Chicago, Illinois in 1972. He attended Pratt Institute and studied Fine Arts, majoring in Painting. He began plein air painting on the rooftops of Pratt Institute, capturing the atmospheric effects of the surrounding cityscape of Brooklyn and Manhattan. During his summers off at his home in Bainbridge (near Cleveland, Ohio) he continued studying the plein air technique painting in the rural environments he was familiar with.
Madill strives for a sense of realism in the physical subject matter, that is, adhering to accuracy in the scale, proportion, and light/dark value of objects before him en plein air (painted from live observation– mostly outdoors). He also exhibits elements of impressionism: strong evidence of brushstroke, a tendency to exaggerate color, and an aim to find a mood, a discovery, or a new expression in our view of the ordinary world. Oil on canvas, and gouache on watercolor paper are his current mediums of choice.
